Mountain Bikes
He received his sponsorship when he was only 15. “Not many people get sponsored at that young an age,” he explains. “Most people are 18 to 20 years old when they get sponsored. And it’s hard to get a sponsorship.” The sponsorship covers the cost of his races plus providing parts for his bike which always needs maintenance.

Next season, he plans to buy a full suspension bike with money he’s earned from a summer job this year plus refereeing over the winter. A full suspension bike costs anywhere from $2000 to $6000.

He practices near his home on trails he’s built with the help of friends. “I prefer freeride,” Jordaine says. “(Jumping off) 15’ to 18’ cliffs is an adrenalin rush. And being in the air is the best feeling. It’s just fun.” He’s not concerned about injuries. “It only hurts ‘til it stops,” he laughs.

Another mountain biker who traveled to Smithers for the downhill race, is a bit more cautious. Bruce Martindale, who entered the age 35+ category of the race, says he may be a few seconds behind some of the other riders and that’s fine by him.

In addition to elbow and knee pads, gloves and a full-face helmet, Bruce says he wears shoulder pads, too. He’s scraped against a few trees in the two months he’s been mountain biking.

After finishing the race, Bruce intends to do a freeride down the mountain. “(The trail is so rugged) it’s harder to walk the trail than ride it,” he comments.

Racing down the mountain

“It’s the adrenalin,” Bruce says when asked what he likes about the sport. “100 per cent adrenalin. It’s hard work (to push your bike uphill) but worth the effort. I did a 4’ drop and it was phenomenal. You’re up there for less than a quarter of a second (before you land) but you did it and you’re still riding.”

The adrenalin rush and the satisfaction these riders achieve from the physical challenges of mountain biking, whether it’s cross-country, downhill, or freeride, seems to keep them coming back for more. As Bruce so aptly put it... they’re still riding.
